About St
Lucia
St
Lucia is often referred to as 'The Helen of the West' - in part
in tribute to her immense natural beauty and in part in remembrance
of the many battles (fourteen in all) fought over her during the
colonial era between rivals France and England. Just a mere 238
square miles, this emerald island offers an unparalleled mixture
of history, culture and quiet charm. From tropical forests and cascading
waterfalls to white sandy beaches and dramatic volcanic formations,
St Lucia is indeed rich in splendour and natural allure.
Each May, St
Lucia's Jazz Festival attracts thousands of visitors from all
corners of the globe, and come July the island hosts a most-colourful
week-long street party - Carnival! Yes, St Lucians love to party,
and to prove it there are annual flower festivals, Christmas and
New Year's festivities, Steel Pan and Calypso Competitions, Independence
and National Day celebrations, and not to be forgotten, popular
Friday-night Fish Fries and Street Jump-ups in several of the
island's villages.
